Jamal Qutub / Cut&Paste Motion 2009 from Nimpsy / Jamal Qutub on Vimeo. I created this piece for the 2009 Cut&Paste Motion Design Tournament in Portland. Based on the theme: Reflection. My concept was inspired by our current economic crisis and how the 'crooks' involved have to think about what they've done and must one day take a good look at themselves in the mirror.

I had a great time competing with PDX finest, but I'm glad it's over.

How to cut Sushi in 3d

I've been asked a few times how I did the 'sushi cutting' in the animation above so I will try to explain. It's all slight of hand. What your looking at is 3 versions of the same piece of "sushi".

Sushi #1:
First I designed the sushi halves and placed them on top of each other. They almost form a cube. I put each half into their own separate 'null object' to make animating them separately easier later.

Sushi #2:
Then I put them together and combined the outer skin into a single cube mesh. I make sure to keep everything in the same place by putting all my work into a 'null object'.

Sushi #3:
I take Sushi #2 and duplicate it, then add cuts into the mesh which add the tearing effect when the Sushi, overall, is stretched.

I use the same 'deformer object' on all versions of the Sushi to animate the stretching of the sushi. Animating the null I can move them together and jump between animations to create the tear effect.

Grammy Museum

The Grammy Museum has officially opened in LA. It's a project I've been part of for the last 10 months and I'm happy is done and rocks.

I directed and animated the 'Grammy Greatest Music' Hallway Experience and did motion graphics, editing and some interactive work on the 'In The Studio' experiences.

I modeled this guy in 3D a while ago while working at Nemo Design and I am excited they finally used it for something. There was an art show a few months ago using them as the canvas (check it out here). Shortly after that I received my own Mutant which I have handed off to my good friend Alberto Cerriteño to work his magic on. I will post shots of the completed work of art soon.

Dirty Eyes / 48 Hour Film Fest

Just completed the 48 Hour Film Fest this weekend in Portland, OR. It was 48 hours of hell/fun. I did the filming and effects and shared the editing work with my brother Jihad who wrote and directed. We had an awesome team of actors and crew. Click here to watch the full short in HD.

Jive Software

Check out this animation I worked on recently for Jive Software. It’s a sort of abstract representation of their software and what it does. I did all the 3d animation/rendering. Post work was done by my friend Josh Spivey at Curiosity Group.

Untraceable

Should have posted this a while ago, but since no one comes here it doesn't matter. I got my first 'official' movie role last summer playing the "Young Stoner" in the film Untraceable. I've only got a few lines, but I'm proud of my work. Look for me in the skater scene on the Blackberry. I'm also included on the Untraceable website in their memory game, weird. I'm officially SAG eligible now, so I might just get that card and make this acting thing official...maybe.

Second Story / Library of Congress

Just wrapped up my first project with Second Story: The Library of Congress New Visitor Experience. A bunch of interactive screens, installations, and videos. If you visit the LOC, you'll see some of my motion work on the Orientation Screens and in the Thomas Jefferson Library Videos. Check out this article the New York Times just wrote about it.

Nervo.tv / Fox Movies

I worked on a series of idents with Nando Costa at Nervo.tv. You can watch it here.
I did a lot of camera moves and grass simulation (using Cinema4d) and rendering (using Cinema4d and Maxwell render). A challenging and fun project.
